NUP’s Mufumbiro Nominated in Absentia for Nakawa East MP Seat

NUP’s Mufumbiro Nominated in Absentia for Nakawa East MP Seat

The National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has been nominated in absentia to contest for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat in the 2026 General Election.

Mufumbiro, who is currently on remand at Luzira Prison on charges of illegal drilling and conspiracy to commit a felony, was nominated through his wife, assisted by Kampala Lord Mayor aspirant Ronald Balimwezo. His nomination papers were duly submitted and cleared by the Electoral Commission on Wednesday.

At the nomination centre, NUP officials described the exercise as a demonstration of the party’s determination to ensure that all its members, regardless of their current circumstances, participate fully in the democratic process.

Mufumbiro’s nomination adds to a growing list of opposition figures entering the 2026 race while in detention.

Under Uganda’s Parliamentary Elections Act, 2005, the law requires that a candidate’s nomination be made by two registered voters who appear before the returning officer and tender the necessary documents, including a signed declaration by the aspirant. However, the Act does not specifically require the personal presence of the candidate at the nomination venue.

This means that as long as the candidate’s documents are correctly completed, signed, and submitted within the legal timeframe, a nomination in absentia remains valid under Ugandan electoral law.
