The National Unity Platform (NUP) has received seven Members of Parliament who officially joined the party in a ceremony held on Wednesday at its headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Kampala.

Security was tight around the party offices, with personnel from various security agencies deployed throughout the day. Those who crossed over include Dr. Timothy Batuwa (Jinja South West) and David Isabirye Aga (Jinja North), both formerly with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). Others are Fortunate Nantongo (Kyotera Woman MP), John Paul Mpalanyi (Kyotera County), and Lutamaguzi Ssemakula (Nakaseke South), all of whom were elected on the Democratic Party (DP) ticket. Joan Namutaawe (Masaka District Woman MP) and Patrick Nsanja (Ntenjeru South), who had been Independent, also joined NUP.
Former NBS Television news anchor Zambali Bulasio Mukasa was also unveiled as a new party member. He announced plans to contest the Nansana Municipality seat on the NUP ticket after resigning from the media.
Party leaders used the occasion to reiterate their demand for the release of supporters they say are still in detention. The issue of political prisoners has remained central to the party’s messaging.

NUP was originally registered in 2004 as the National Unity, Reconciliation and Development Party (NURP). It gained national attention in 2020 when Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, took over its leadership and rebranded it.
The party went on to win 56 parliamentary seats in the 2021 general elections, becoming the largest opposition group in Parliament and overtaking the FDC.
