NUP Vows To Appeal Nalukoola Election Nullification, Cites Judicial Bias

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced it will appeal the High Court ruling that nullified the election of Ronald Nalukoola as Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, following what the party describes as a politically motivated and unjust decision.

Speaking shortly a party and constituency leaders’ retreat in Gulu Northern Uganda, NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, said the judgment delivered by Justice Bernard Namanya not only undermines the will of the people but also exposes the rot within Uganda’s judicial system.

“We are, of course, going to appeal,” Kyagulanyi declared. “But should the Court of Appeal also be unjust, we are more than happy to go back to the people of Kawempe, because they said it once they will say it again and again.”

The ruling stems from a petition filed by NRM’s Faridah Nambi Kigongo, who alleged that the March 13 by-election was marred by voter bribery and election irregularities, including campaigning on polling day. Justice Namanya found merit in some of the claims and annulled Nalukoola’s victory.

However, Kyagulanyi maintains that the annulment is part of a broader political agenda aimed at undermining opposition voices.

“This shows you how much our institutions have been muzzled by the regime,” he said. “Nalukoola won on all polling stations, but it took public pressure just to get him gazetted and sworn in. This was never about the election being on trial it was the judiciary on trial, and it has exposed itself.”

Kyagulanyi accused the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) of using state resources, including violence and public funds, to fight the NUP candidate, but noted that the people had still chosen Nalukoola.

“They unleashed violence, poured billions into this race, but we still beat them,” he said. “Judge Namanya might nullify the election of Nalukoola, but he cannot cancel the people’s desire for change.”

The Electoral Commission had declared Nalukoola winner of the hotly contested by-election with 17,939 votes, far ahead of Nambi, who garnered 9,058. The ruling now casts uncertainty over the representation of Kawempe North as the country inches closer to the 2026 general elections.

NUP insists the judgment will not deter its momentum.

“We are confident the people elected Ronald Nalukoola, and they will elect him again and again,” Kyagulanyi added.
