NUP Unveils New Election Team, Signals Broader National Agenda Ahead of 2026 Polls

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has today Tuesday 06th May made major strategic adjustments to its internal electoral machinery as the party intensifies its preparations for the 2026 general elections.

The changes were rolled out during a high-level Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting chaired by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule. The session brought together top party officials, including Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, and senior leaders from across the country.

At the heart of the meeting was the appointment of a new Election Management Committee to replace the outgoing team whose term has come to an end. While praising the departing committee for their efforts, Rubongoya emphasized that the party was entering a new phase that required renewed energy and a broader focus.

“The outgoing committee did a commendable job,” Rubongoya said. “But now, it’s time to hand over the mantle to a fresh team to steer us into the next electoral cycle.”

Harriet Chemtai, a mobiliser from the Sebei sub-region, was elected as the new committee chairperson. Responding to critics who have labeled NUP a Buganda-based party, Chemtai declared, “I am from Sebei. The NUP of today is not the NUP of 2021. We’re expanding, and the country will see the difference.”

Former Makerere University Guild President Ivan Ssempijja will serve as her deputy, joining a diverse committee representing all regions of Uganda. The team includes technical experts, legal advisors, and regional representatives from the east, north, west, and central parts of the country.
