The National Unity Platform (NUP) has vowed to drag the Electoral Commission (EC) to court, accusing it of deliberately frustrating the nomination of the party’s candidates for LC5 chairperson positions in several districts.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, NUP officials claimed that returning officers and electoral registrars in districts such as Ssembabule, Katakwi, and Nakaseke erected barriers that prevented party candidates from completing their nominations.

“This appears to be a deliberate scheme aimed at undermining our participation in the forthcoming local government elections,” said NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya. He added that the party had already lodged complaints with the EC and would not hesitate to seek redress in court if corrective action was not taken.
The party insists that the alleged irregularities amount to disenfranchisement, not only of its candidates but also of voters who are denied a fair democratic choice.
The EC has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
The dispute comes amid mounting tensions ahead of the local government polls, with opposition parties stepping up calls for transparency, accountability, and equitable treatment in the electoral process.
NUP has urged the Commission to urgently address the matter and guarantee that all candidates are given equal opportunity to participate in the elections in line with the law.
