NUP Petitions Court Over Eddy Mutwe’s Disappearance

National Unity Platform (NUP) party on Wednesday revealed that it had filed a court plea demanding the release or court appearance of the personal security head of party president Edward Ssebuufu, alias Eddy Mutwe,

Mutwe was allegedly seized from his home in Mukono on Sunday under unclear circumstances, with the party claiming that his abduction is part of a broader campaign to stifle opposition ahead of the 2026 elections.

At a media address at NUP’s Makerere Kavule headquarters, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu accused the government of orchestrating systematic abductions of opposition supporters, saying many of them are held incommunicado without formal charges.

“These incidents are not random,” Kyagulanyi said. “They are calculated acts of repression aimed at destabilising our structures. We will not be silenced.”

He claimed that Mutwe’s disappearance mirrors previous patterns in which NUP members are picked up by plain-clothed security personnel, detained in undisclosed locations, and later released without due process. Kyagulanyi cited previous cases in which victims reappeared with physical injuries and testimonies alleging torture by state operatives.

The opposition leader noted that Mutwe’s case is only the latest in a growing list of what the party refers to as “enforced disappearances.” He also accused security forces of deliberately targeting NUP’s internal mobilization activities, particularly as the country gears up for the next general election.

“These attacks are political,” Kyagulanyi said. “Our offices have been raided, and our staff intimidated. But we remain focused on our mission to return power to the people.”

Mutwe is no stranger to state custody. In December 2020, he was arrested in Kalangala during a campaign trail and later charged with unlawful possession of ammunition before the army court. He spent several weeks in detention, with NUP claiming he was tortured while in custody.

Kyagulanyi said the current legal move is intended to force the state to either justify Mutwe’s detention or produce him in court immediately.

“We have gone to court to demand that the state either presents Mutwe before a competent court or releases him unconditionally,” he said. “Holding him without communication is a violation of his rights and a threat to the rule of law.”

As of Wednesday evening, security agencies had not issued any official statement regarding Mutwe’s whereabouts or legal status.
