NTV Crew Barred from Parliament Over Airing of ‘Unopposed’ Stories

Security personnel at Parliament on Tuesday morning denied access to an NTV Uganda crew and withdrew their press accreditation tags, sparking outrage from the Leader of the Opposition (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi.

Ssenyonyi, who made the revelation on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, said the journalists were stopped at the entrance and informed that there were “instructions” not to allow them into the precincts of Parliament.

“This morning, the NTV crew was denied access to Parliament, and their accreditation press tags were withdrawn from them by security at the entrance,” Ssenyonyi posted. “On asking what the reason for this was, apparently security just told them they have instructions not to let them in.”

According to the LOP, the move is reportedly linked to NTV’s recent stories highlighting the growing number of ‘unopposed candidates’ in next year’s elections, including the **Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

“Information reaching us is that the leadership of Parliament is angry because of the stories NTV has been running about ‘unopposed candidates,’ including the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. What a shame!!!” Ssenyonyi added.

By press time, Parliament’s Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, had not yet issued an official response to the claims.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about media freedom and access to public institutions, particularly for journalists covering politically sensitive topics.
