According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 2:05 p.m., when Mr. Musinguzi, accompanied by a group of supporters, attempted to access the polling station where voters were preparing to line up. He was reportedly blocked from entering, sparking a scuffle that quickly escalated into a full-blown fight.
With no security personnel present, more than 50 people stormed the station, attacking each other with sticks and timber. In the melee, Mr. Musinguzi was hit on the head and fell to the ground as rival supporters rained blows on him.
“He was on the ground, trying to get up, but several people kept hitting him,” said one witness. The legislator was later whisked away for medical attention in a multi-purpose pickup truck.
The violence came amid rising tensions between camps allied to Mr. Musinguzi and rival candidate Mr. Ankwasa, who were scheduled to vote at the same station. Reports indicate that the two camps have been involved in running battles since Tuesday, leaving several people injured and some arrested.
Elsewhere, at Ntungamo Modern Secondary School polling station, candidate Michael Katurebe clashed with Musinguzi’s supporters after they allegedly attempted to vote despite not appearing on the voters’ roll.
