The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has decided against holding internal primaries to select its candidate for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election. The announcement was made by Salim Uhuru, the NRM chairman for Kampala and Mayor of Kampala Central Division.
Uhuru stated that the decision follows directives from President Museveni, who also serves as the NRM party chairperson. Museveni urged party officials to ensure that only one candidate represents the NRM in the by-election to prevent internal divisions that have previously led to members contesting as independents.
“We are determined to take over Kampala,” Uhuru told The Nile Post. “This time, there will be no room for independents. Our focus is on unity and ensuring we secure this seat.”
The NRM has faced challenges in past elections where disagreements from primaries resulted in divided support, weakening the party’s chances against opponents. Uhuru stressed the importance of avoiding such setbacks, describing the by-election as a critical test for the party.
“This by-election is a strategic opportunity for us. We want to win without any internal disputes,” he added.
The Electoral Commission has set the roadmap for the by-election, with candidate nominations slated for February 26 and 27, and voting scheduled for March 13.
Uhuru highlighted the government’s investment in Kawempe North through initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga programs, expressing confidence that these contributions will garner support for the NRM candidate.
“We have delivered significant programs to the people of Kawempe North. It’s now time for the community to support the NRM,” he said.
The Kawempe North parliamentary seat was declared vacant earlier this month following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya, who had represented the constituency since 2021.
