The National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) have announced a joint effort to intensify campaigns in support of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as he seeks another term in the 2026 General Election.
At a press briefing in Kampala, leaders from both political groups emphasised that they are “one family” under the NRM and will coordinate strategies to consolidate support for Museveni’s candidacy.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong traced the President’s candidature to the party’s recently concluded internal processes. “On 28th February 2024, we began by updating the party register, digitising it, and conducting structural elections that culminated in the delegates’ conference. Our presidential candidate came through these efforts, and his candidature is a demand from the party members, including those in NRM and those who believe in PLU. They have all agreed we should have one presidential candidate, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,” Todwong said.
He revealed that Museveni’s nomination will take place on Tuesday between 9:00am and 11:00am at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala, followed by an address to supporters. Afterward, the NRM and PLU will synchronise their campaign programmes and release a joint campaign roadmap.
“Our campaigns will be coordinated together with PLU and our head office. We shall all be in the field campaigning for one candidate as a joint candidate for all of us,” Todwong stated.
PLU Secretary General Hon. Kabanda reaffirmed the alliance, saying the Patriotic League would work fully with the ruling party in the coming elections. “The Patriotic League of Uganda is going to be working with the National Resistance Movement in the General Elections of 2026. Most of us are already NRM,” Kabanda said, introducing his delegation that included National Vice Chairman Mike Onwajira.
He also highlighted the close ties between the two organisations, noting that PLU has members within the NRM secretariat and that several NRM leaders openly support PLU’s activities. “The founder of the Patriotic League of Uganda is the current Secretary General of NRM,” Kabanda pointed out.
The announcement cements cooperation between the ruling party and PLU, led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as Uganda heads into a heated election season.
