No Return: Nsereko Rules Out Kampala Central Re-Election and Mayoral Race

Hon. Muhammad Nsereko, the long-serving Member of Parliament for Kampala Central, has announced his decision not to seek re-election in the upcoming general elections. The seasoned politician, who first assumed office in 2011, confirmed during an interview with a popular YouTuber that he would not be returning to represent Kampala Central or vying for the position of Kampala’s Lord Mayor.

“I am not coming back for Kampala Central. I already told the people I won’t be returning; a leader is judged by their word, and my word is very clear. Secondly, I’m not coming for Lord Mayor,” Nsereko emphasized.

This announcement comes after over a decade of service representing one of Uganda’s most politically and economically dynamic constituencies. Nsereko has been known for his independent stance and vocal advocacy on key issues affecting his constituents, often positioning himself as a critical voice in the country’s political landscape.

Speculations About Future Political Ambitions

When asked about the possibility of contesting for the presidency, Nsereko did not provide a definitive response. Instead, he posed a rhetorical question to the host: “For you, what do you think?” This ambiguity has fueled speculation about his potential interest in pursuing a higher political office.

Nsereko’s decision marks a significant shift in Kampala’s political arena, with many political observers and analysts keen to see who will emerge as the frontrunner for the hotly contested Kampala Central parliamentary seat. His departure opens the field for new aspirants to vie for the position in one of Uganda’s most closely watched electoral battles.

Legacy of Service

During his tenure, Nsereko gained a reputation as a pragmatic and influential leader, often bridging political divides and advocating for policies aimed at improving urban governance, infrastructure, and social services in Kampala. His contributions have resonated with many residents, cementing his place as a pivotal figure in the city’s development narrative.

Nsereko’s strategic decision not to seek re-election aligns with his stated belief in leadership renewal and making space for fresh perspectives. “A leader’s word is their bond,” he reiterated, affirming his commitment to honoring promises made to his constituents.

Looking Ahead

As the political landscape evolves, all eyes remain on Nsereko’s next move. While his future political ambitions remain undisclosed, his influence and experience suggest he may still play a prominent role in shaping Uganda’s political discourse.

For Kampala Central, the forthcoming elections promise an exciting contest, with new candidates seeking to step into a role that Nsereko has defined with his dynamic leadership and dedication over the past 12 years.
