Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of a truck, which was transporting both cattle and passengers, lost control while descending a slope after the vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure. The truck overturned, killing nine of the passengers instantly and injuring three others.
In a statement issued shortly after the crash, traffic police spokesperson SP Kananura confirmed the casualties and cautioned truck drivers against dangerous practices that continue to claim lives on ugandan roads.
“The victims were all riding on the said vehicle,” Kananura stated. “We urge all truck drivers to strictly adhere to safety regulations and desist from transporting passengers on top of cargo.”
He emphasized that such practices not only breach traffic laws but also expose passengers to fatal risks, especially on Uganda’s hilly terrain and poorly maintained roads.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported the injured to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The identities of the deceased have not yet been made public, as authorities continue to notify their families.
Kananura called on transporters, especially in rural areas, to prioritize human life over convenience or profit. “Let’s commit to safety. These tragedies are preventable,” he said.
