Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential flag bearer Nathan Nandala Mafabi has promised sweeping development projects for Buvuma district, including the establishment of a mega fish factory and extension of electricity across the islands.
On his second day of official campaigns, Mafabi traversed the islands of Lake Victoria, where he told residents that the factory would provide jobs and help tackle poverty.
“This is our lake and everything in it belongs to us. Poverty should not kill us when we have this God-given treasure. If you vote for me, I will start a serious fish factory in this district,” Mafabi said while addressing a midday rally at Kadindili village.
He further assured residents that his government would work on district roads to improve connectivity with neighboring districts and bring electricity to the islands. “There is nowhere it’s written that Buvuma must never have electricity. We must have power all over this place,” Mafabi declared.
Earlier in the day, Mafabi toured St. Mary’s Primary School in Buvuma, where he expressed shock at the dire learning conditions.
“It’s heartbreaking to see such a school in this situation. Children are studying under trees, and when it threatens to rain, teachers send them home to avoid disaster. Teachers have no staff houses, no facilities nothing. This is a broken education system that must be fixed,” Mafabi said.
Drawing on his own background of studying in village schools before advancing to Makerere University, Mafabi promised to make education reform his top priority if elected president. “We don’t want to give lip service. We are performers, and we need to change this. President Museveni has had 40 years, he cannot fix it now. It’s us who must repair the system and move this country ahead,” he told supporters.
Mafabi, who launched his campaign trail in Buikwe on Monday with a mega rally in Njeru Town Council, is expected to take his vote-hunting efforts to Iganga District on Wednesday.
