Nandala Pledges Compensation for Northern Uganda War Victims

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has blamed the persistent poverty in Northern Uganda on the government’s failure to compensate victims of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency.

Addressing a rally in Koch Goma Town Council, Nwoya District, Mafabi said thousands of families who lost relatives and property during the two-decade-long conflict have been neglected, leaving the region trapped in poverty and economic stagnation.

“If government had compensated the victims of war and those who lost their loved ones, Northern Uganda would not be suffering from such deep poverty today,” Mafabi told supporters.

The Acholi and Lango sub-regions were among the hardest hit by the LRA rebellion, led by Joseph Kony, which started in 1987 and lasted nearly 20 years. The conflict was marked by mass abductions of children and brutal attacks on civilians, especially between 1987 and 1994, when the insurgency intensified with alleged backing from the Sudanese government.

Mafabi promised that under an FDC government, all war victims would be compensated with accrued interest to account for the years of neglect. He pledged that his administration would not tolerate land grabbing, and would instead ensure that all grabbed land is returned to rightful owners, in line with the FDC manifesto.

“Our people in Acholi must be treated with fairness and dignity. Compensation is not charity it is justice long overdue,” he said.

The FDC presidential hopeful also unveiled plans to economically empower rural communities. According to the party’s manifesto, each village would receive 100 million shillings to support local development projects and improve household welfare.

Mafabi added that the one million shillings distributed under the Parish Development Model (PDM) would serve as an additional bonus to boost productivity.

He urged residents of Northern Uganda to “vote for the key” in the upcoming general elections, promising that an FDC government would prioritize fairness, accountability, and restoration of dignity to communities affected by decades of war.
