Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has told voters in Rukungiri District that he will immediately secure the release of FDC founder president Dr. Kizza Besigye if elected, arguing that the long-time opposition figure has “no case to answer.”
Addressing supporters during his campaign stopover, Mafabi said residents frequently raise concerns about Besigye’s repeated arrests and political prosecution, noting that the issue continues to weigh heavily on the region that has long been regarded as Besigye’s political stronghold.

Mafabi accused President Yoweri Museveni’s administration of unjustly targeting Besigye and using detention as a tool to silence dissent.
“You say you want Besigye. We all love him. But it is not me who imprisoned him; it is Mr. Museveni,” Mafabi told the crowd. “I have no personal prison. Please give me your vote and I will release him immediately because he has no case to answer.”
He added that residents should have questioned the President about Besigye’s continued legal troubles when he recently campaigned in the district. “Museveni came to Rukungiri for campaigns; you should have asked him about Besigye,” Mafabi said, stressing that he and Besigye have been together in the struggle since 2000.
Mafabi also used the rally to outline his broader campaign agenda, pledging to combat widespread poverty, support boda boda riders with interest-free motorcycle loans, improve welfare for teachers and doctors, expand access to free education for their children, and implement a nationwide road rehabilitation programme.
He told supporters that only the FDC has a “workable plan” to uplift Ugandans and ensure equitable development across the country.
The Rukungiri engagement forms part of Mafabi’s continued mobilisation drive in western Uganda as the presidential campaigns intensify.
