Police in Namutumba have taken into custody Richard Mwanja, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) registrar for the district, on allegations of manipulating results during the recently concluded party parliamentary primaries.
According to Namutumba Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Fred Bangu, the arrest was made after credible reports indicated that Mwanja tampered with official tallies and declared conflicting outcomes in several constituencies.
“We have apprehended Richard Mwanja over irregularities in the conduct of the primaries. He will be charged in court,” Bangu told journalists, adding that the move is intended to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Investigations reveal that Mwanja allegedly announced different winners for the same parliamentary positions in Busiki County, Busiki North, and the district Woman MP seat, sparking confusion and discontent among candidates. He is also accused of declaring results in Bukono County without proper tallying, further undermining transparency in the process.
The arrest comes amid growing scrutiny of NRM primaries nationwide, following widespread complaints of vote tampering, bribery, and violence in certain areas. Party officials have promised to address these issues through internal mechanisms and legal redress where necessary.
Mwanja remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue. Authorities have pledged to take firm action against any individuals found culpable of election malpractice.
