After years of ideological drift and public support for opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, Nakaseke South MP Paulson Kasana Semakula Luttamaguzi has formally joined the National Unity Platform (NUP), officially parting ways with the Democratic Party (DP), which he represented in Parliament for nearly a decade.

Luttamaguzi, known for his fiery criticism of government excesses and his staunch advocacy for rural communities, made his switch public on Wednesday 21 May, aligning himself fully with the party he has unofficially supported since 2021.
In the run-up to the 2021 general elections, Luttamaguzi despite holding the DP flag was one of the earliest sitting MPs to openly back Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, for the presidency. His visible presence at NUP rallies and campaign events deepened tensions with DP leadership, particularly with the then-party president and presidential candidate Norbert Mao.
“I supported Kyagulanyi when it wasn’t fashionable because I believed in the message of change and generational leadership,” Luttamaguzi said recently. “Now I’ve decided to make it official.”
NUP, which has grown rapidly since its formal registration in 2020, welcomed the move, calling it a reflection of the public trust Luttamaguzi has earned through his consistent pro-people stance in Parliament.
Luttamaguzi has been vocal on issues of land grabbing, corruption, and the marginalization of rural constituencies. In Parliament, he is known for his blunt, unapologetic delivery and consistent critique of security excesses and economic mismanagement.

His switch is seen as both symbolic and strategic for NUP, as it consolidates the party’s support in greater Luweero and among DP-leaning constituencies.
Paulson Kasana Semakula Luttamaguzi was first elected Member of Parliament for Nakaseke South County in 2016 on the Democratic Party ticket, reclaiming the seat from NRM dominance. He retained the seat in the 2021 general elections, again on the DP ticket but with de facto support from NUP structures.
Born and raised in Nakaseke District, Luttamaguzi has a background in economics and banking, having worked in the financial sector before venturing into politics. He is a graduate of Makerere University, where he studied economics and later acquired experience in community development and local governance.
Over the years, he has built a strong base among rural voters and youth, admired for his accessibility and outspoken defense of land rights and public accountability.
