In an official condolence message addressed to His Eminence Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, President Museveni conveyed heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the Government and people of Uganda.
“It is with profound sadness that I have received the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” the President wrote. “On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Uganda, and my behalf, I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to you and, through you, to the entire Catholic Church worldwide.”
Museveni described Pope Francis as “an extraordinary spiritual leader and deeply respected theologian,” noting that his unwavering commitment to faith, social justice, and humility revitalized the Church’s mission in an increasingly secular world.
Highlighting the pope’s inclusive leadership, Museveni praised his openness to dialogue with other faiths, such as Muslims and Orthodox Christians. He likened Pope Francis to the Good Samaritan in the Bible, saying, “His readiness and enthusiasm to deal with other faiths meant that he was truly on the side (track) of Jesus, as taught in the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:29–37.”
The President emphasized that the Pope’s legacy of love, unity, and service would live on for generations. “His voice for peace, social justice, compassion, and humility touched the hearts of millions and inspired hope among the faithful,” Museveni noted.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church. He passed away at the age of 88, after a historic papacy marked by reform, outreach, and efforts to modernize the Church’s approach to global challenges.
Uganda remains in mourning alongside Catholics around the globe, remembering the pontiff’s historic 2015 visit to the country and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of many.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Museveni concluded.
