President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed a fresh review of the Ministry of Luweero Triangle’s budget to improve support for war veterans and families affected by the 1981–86 liberation struggle.
Speaking during the 36th Heroes’ Day celebrations held at Lyantonde Technical Institute in Kabula County, the President saluted resistance fighters and the communities that backed the National Resistance Army during the bush war. He made special mention of the people of Kabula (Lyantonde) and Sembabule for their unwavering support during that critical period.

“We shall continue prioritising the welfare of war veterans,” Museveni said. “Instead of building whole houses for them, the government can supply iron sheets and cement, while families contribute bricks and labour.”
The President said this targeted approach would help solve one clear problem at a time, avoiding the current inefficiencies caused by spreading resources across multiple unrelated projects.
Museveni also praised local residents for embracing agriculture as a path out of poverty. “I was happy to see that the people of Kabula have improved in growing coffee, bananas, and rearing livestock,” he said. “That is the right direction.”
The event, themed “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration,” was marked with the awarding of medals to 50 Ugandans for their contributions to the country’s liberation, unity, and development.
Heroes’ Day commemorates the sacrifices made by individuals and communities during Uganda’s struggle for freedom and is observed annually on June 9.
President Museveni, who led the 1981–86 liberation war, urged Ugandans to remain vigilant and hardworking in safeguarding the peace and prosperity that the country’s heroes fought to achieve.
