President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Monday launched the Western Uganda leg of his 2026 presidential campaign with a strong call for Ugandans to embrace wealth creation as the engine of the country’s next phase of socio-economic transformation.
Addressing thousands at Saaza Grounds in Kisoro District, the NRM national chairman said Uganda’s progress now depends on lifting household incomes, especially in rural areas, if the country is to make what he called “a qualitative leap into high middle-income status.”
“The reasons we are here are to ask you to support the National Resistance Movement and to give you the reasons why,” Museveni said. “People move around saying ‘support me,’ but ask them what they have done for the country. Many of Uganda’s problems sugar, cement, salt, clothes have been solved by the NRM.”

He told supporters that while peace and development remain key NRM achievements, transforming individual households is now the centrepiece of his campaign. “We have tarmac roads up to Bunagana and Cyanika, but people don’t sleep on the road. That is why the NRM emphasises wealth creation for every household,” he added.
Museveni highlighted success stories of rural Ugandans who have built thriving commercial farms, including milk producer George Matongo of Nakaseke and poultry farmer Joseph Basangwa of Kamuli, earning millions daily from agriculture. He encouraged farmers to adopt the 4-acre model promoting coffee, fruits, dairy, poultry, piggery, and fish farming and noted that job growth is increasingly driven by commercial agriculture, industry, ICT, and services.
On infrastructure, the President cited improved transport, electricity, and education facilities. He pointed to completed road upgrades from Kampala to Kisoro and promised to finish key routes, including Kabale–Kisoro–Mgahinga National Park road.
However, he raised concern over education gaps in Kisoro, noting that 26 out of 71 parishes lack a government primary school and 10 out of 24 sub-counties have no government secondary school.
“With your support, we shall consolidate the achievements and continue transforming Uganda,” he said.
A strong delegation of senior NRM leaders joined the President, urging unity and overwhelming support in the 2026 elections. Speaker Anita Among said Ugandans will choose NRM to safeguard peace and development, while Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa called the decision to begin the western campaign in Kisoro “a sign of love.”
Western region vice chairperson Hon. Asiimwe Jonard reaffirmed the area’s loyalty to the ruling party.
The rally attracted high-profile figures including NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, Cabinet ministers, MPs, and prominent Kisoro personalities such as Gen. Kale Kayihura and King Ceasor Mulenga.
