The declaration came as the President personally picked nomination forms from the NRM Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi, at the party’s headquarters in Kampala, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni.
Museveni said his decision to contest again was inspired by the overwhelming support he received from citizens across the country during recent tours to assess the implementation of government programs.
“It is because of the love and encouragement I got from the NRM people all over the country that I am offering myself again. You energized me,” he told jubilant supporters.
The veteran leader, who has led Uganda since 1986, said Uganda is finally shifting into a new era of transformation, with growing investments in science, innovation, and value addition.
“We are now on the right track. You can see what we are doing with vehicles, vaccines, and ICT,” he said. “In the next term, I want us to push value addition further—sugar, coffee, fruits, and other products.”
Museveni promised to intensify the fight against corruption if re-elected, stating that eliminating wastage and theft would unlock Uganda’s full development potential.
He also urged leaders and party supporters to shun politics based on tribe, religion, or region, stressing the importance of ideological clarity and unity under the NRM’s core values.
“Let us avoid politics of identity. Ours is a party of issues and policies,” he said. “We must work together to build a strong, united force focused on national development.”
He further instructed NRM district chairpersons to maintain neutrality during upcoming party primaries, emphasizing internal democracy and people’s choice.
NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong praised the President’s decision, noting that the party had received numerous appeals from grassroots supporters calling for him to stand again.
“The people’s voice has been heard. Ugandans across the country were requesting you to offer yourself again, and we are glad you have,” said Todwong.
He reported that the party now boasts over 20 million registered members and assured the President of a credible and transparent internal election process.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, while issuing the nomination forms, thanked Museveni for honoring party processes and revealed that the President will return for formal nomination on July 5, 2025.
The event was attended by top government officials and NRM leaders, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, ministers, MPs, and members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC).
Museveni’s move sets the stage for his seventh presidential bid, reaffirming his grip on party leadership as the NRM gears up for a heated 2026 electoral season.
