Museveni Calls For Disciplined Politics, Warns Against Intimidation Tactics

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued a strong call for political restraint and national unity, urging leaders to embrace disciplined democracy and reject intimidation tactics that threaten Uganda’s democratic space.

In a statement released on his official X (formerly Twitter) account following two high-level military meetings, Museveni revealed that he chaired the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) High Command meeting and the Defence Forces Council at State House Entebbe, where matters of national security and political conduct were discussed.

“I emphasised the need for disciplined democracy in Uganda,” the president wrote. “The NRM advocates for disciplined democracy, not hooliganism or bad language, because we want Ugandans to decide what they want without intimidation.”

Museveni condemned the behavior of some politicians whom he accused of engaging in actions that intimidate the population. “This is not the African way,” he said, warning that security agencies are taking the matter seriously and “it will come to an end.”

The president stressed the importance of respectful public discourse, adding, “You must speak well in public; do not resort to negative speech.”

In a broader appeal, Museveni directed a message to the youth, urging them to embody the values and vision of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), which has ruled Uganda since 1986.

“I therefore urge young people to uphold the values of the NRM,” he said. “The challenge for young people is to understand what the pioneers started and to carry that legacy forward.”

He called on Ugandan youth to embrace uzalendo a Swahili term meaning patriotism by working toward the betterment of the country. “They should work with a spirit of patriotism, commitment, and service to the nation,” he noted.

The statement was accompanied by photos of the military meetings, showing top army officials, including Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and other security leaders.
