Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) President Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu has officially returned his nomination forms to contest as the party’s presidential flag bearer ahead of Uganda’s 2026 General Elections.
Speaking to journalists at ANT headquarters in Kampala, Muntu revealed that ANT is engaged in ongoing discussions with Peoples front for Freedom PFF under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the goal of fielding joint candidates at all levels, including president, to maximize opposition strength against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The former army commander disclosed that consultations with other parties, including the National Unity Platform (NUP), are expected to follow if the initial MoU framework with PFF succeeds.
“Our focus is to build a counterforce capable of removing this regime. Even if we don’t agree on everything, we can work on key issues like vote protection and communication to avoid hostility among opposition parties,” he noted.
Muntu criticized the recently concluded NRM primaries, describing them as “chaotic and as messy as 2021.” He argued that internal failures within the ruling party reflect what to expect in the national election unless reforms are enforced.
“Parties can only give what they have. When you see what is going on inside NRM, it’s clear they cannot act differently in the national process,” he said.
Muntu emphasized the need for leaders of integrity and urged Ugandans not to lose hope despite frustrations with Uganda’s political environment.
“The country is broken because of leaders who don’t care about the people. To change that, we need leaders who value integrity, fairness, and transparency,” he stressed.
He reiterated that regime change remains the only way to restore good governance and economic growth, pledging to continue mobilizing Ugandans for a united opposition front.

The ANT leader also hinted at campaign timelines, noting that national presidential nominations have been moved forward to September 26–27, with campaigns likely to begin at the end of September.
He further confirmed that the party will conclude its presidential flag bearer selection on Monday, following an internal conference. The nomination exercise officially closes on July 27, 2025.
“Today I returned my forms and have been duly nominated. We’ll know the outcomes during our conference on Monday,” said Muntu.
