Mpuuga Declares War On NUP, Threatens Lawsuit Over “Defamatory” Claims

Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga has escalated his political feud with National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana, announcing plans to sue the duo for defamation. The legal threat follows accusations made by Kyagulanyi and Ssewanyana during a May 6 press briefing, where they allegedly linked Mpuuga to the arrest and detention of Ssewanyana and the late Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya.

Addressing journalists in Kampala on Wednesday 7th May, Mpuuga, now the National Coordinator of the newly formed Democratic Alliance (DA), dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. “Mr. Kyagulanyi has turned my name into his best subject,” Mpuuga remarked, suggesting that the NUP leader is using him as a scapegoat to divert attention from internal party issues.

The rift between Mpuuga and NUP leadership traces back to a controversial UGX 500 million service award Mpuuga received during his tenure as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Kyagulanyi suspended Mpuuga from his position as NUP Deputy President for the Central Region, citing a lack of satisfactory explanation for the payout. Mpuuga, however, resisted calls to resign, accusing Kyagulanyi of double standards and misrepresenting facts

In a bold move signaling a definitive break from NUP, Mpuuga unveiled the Democratic Alliance on December 6, 2024. Positioned as a unifying force for Uganda’s fragmented opposition, the DA aims to field candidates at all levels, including a presidential contender, in the upcoming 2026 general elections. “The leading opposition party is in a deep slumber,” Mpuuga asserted, criticizing NUP’s current state and emphasizing the need for a more dynamic and strategic opposition platform.

The DA has already attracted notable figures from various political backgrounds, including former presidential contender Abed Bwanika and musician Patrick Mulwana, popularly known as Alien Skin. Bwanika criticized NUP’s leadership over its stance on LGBTQ rights, while Alien Skin pledged to support the DA’s campaigns, potentially bolstering its appeal among the youth.
