The Minister for Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magezi, has called on Ugandans to take greater responsibility in managing waste, stressing that the success of the proposed National Waste Management Policy 2025 depends largely on public involvement.
Speaking during a validation meeting organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Magezi emphasized that meaningful change will only happen if individuals actively engage in proper waste separation at home, reduce littering, and adopt recycling practices.

“While the government and local authorities are key stakeholders, lasting solutions to our waste management challenges must start at the household level. Citizens must take the lead,” Magezi said.
The validation meeting was held to review the Draft National Waste Management Policy before it is submitted to Cabinet for approval. The policy was developed following a directive from Cabinet in the wake of the Kiteezi landfill disaster, which exposed the urgent need for a comprehensive and sustainable waste management framework in Uganda.
Magezi noted that the draft policy outlines both institutional responsibilities and public roles, aiming to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and community participation.
