State Minister for Trade David Bahati has been removed from his position as NRM Chairperson for Kabale District after defying the ruling party’s directive by choosing to run as an independent candidate for the Ndorwa West parliamentary seat.
The decision was announced by Amos Rwansheija, the NRM Administrative Secretary for Kabale District, who confirmed that Bahati’s deputy, Bridget Asinga, has been elevated to serve as the substantive district chairperson.

Rwansheija said the move followed the party’s disciplinary guidelines, which prohibit members who lose in primaries from contesting as independents. “Once a candidate decides to stand outside the NRM flag, they automatically cease to hold any party leadership position,” he said.
Minister Bahati, who has represented Ndorwa West in Parliament since 2006, was defeated in the recent NRM primaries by Counsel Eliab Naturinda. However, instead of supporting the official party flag bearer, Bahati sought nomination as an independent candidate, a move that drew strong criticism from within the party’s leadership.
Party officials in Kabale described the action as necessary to “preserve party discipline and unity” ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
Efforts to reach Bahati for comment on the decision were unsuccessful by press time.
