Captain Mike Mukula has confirmed that his son, Rodney Mukula Akongel, was a victim of suspected poisoning and is currently receiving specialised treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
Speaking at Mulago on Monday, Mukula said Rodney was first stabilised by medical teams in Soroti before being transferred to Kampala. He praised the swift response from both medical personnel and security authorities, describing the intervention as life-saving.

Mukula said Mulago’s medical team had so far offered “some of the best treatment in the country,” and expressed strong confidence in the hospital’s capacity to handle Rodney’s condition.
“I want to say with clarity that we are now in Mulago National Hospital,” he said. “Having been received by some of the best doctors in the country, they are now stabilising him… The kind of treatment he is receiving is one of the best you can have in this country.”
He also thanked the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and Air Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi, for arranging a military helicopter to evacuate Rodney from Soroti. Mukula explained that although the helicopter did not catch up with him en route because he had already left with the ambulance the gesture demonstrated urgency and support.
Mukula further commended the medical team at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, for their rapid action in stabilizing Rodney before transfer.
He described the emotional toll on the family, noting that Rodney’s mother, who recently survived a serious accident, broke down upon seeing her son in critical condition. “For her to see her son as a mother, she broke down again in tears when she saw Rodney,” he said.
The former minister urged the public to pray for Rodney, warning that managing poison cases is complex and unpredictable. He also thanked residents of Soroti who rushed to support the family in the first hours of the emergency.
Rodney Mukula, who is contesting the Soroti City East parliamentary seat as an independent, fell ill on Monday under circumstances that prompted suspicion of poisoning. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
