Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has called on security agencies to exercise restraint and professionalism during the ongoing campaign period, warning against the use of violence and excessive force on political supporters.
In a message shared on his social media platforms, Mayiga said it was “unrealistic” to ban processions, noting that political rallies are naturally energetic and cannot be expected to resemble religious gatherings.

“Political rallies are not prayer meetings to which worshippers go calmly. Political rallies are about excitement,” he wrote, adding that Uganda’s heavy reliance on boda bodas makes it impractical to expect supporters to travel quietly or in isolation.
He urged police to maintain order without partisan interference, saying their role is to protect citizens rather than intimidate them. “Ensure supporters don’t harm others, but let them be,” Mayiga advised.
The Katikkiro condemned the continued use of tear gas, live bullets and attack dogs during campaign policing, saying such tactics only deepen the country’s wounds. “Bullets; tear gas; dogs! These make the Pearl of Africa bleed!” he added.
His remarks come amid growing complaints from opposition candidates and human rights groups about heavy-handed security operations at campaign venues across the country.
Mayiga appealed for a more tolerant and rights-respecting approach as the campaign season intensifies, insisting that peaceful political participation is essential to Uganda’s democratic process.
