Local reports suggest Nakuny had recently been seen speaking with Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers at a detachment in Lokitelaebu, raising suspicions among the rustlers that he was acting as an informant.
This is the second such killing in the district in recent weeks. On June 16, a UPDF soldier, Lance Corporal Francis Ilukol Lowok Dedeng, who was on study leave at Kotido Secondary School, was shot dead at a trading centre in Maaru Sub-county under similar circumstances. He, too, was suspected of leaking information to the army.
Police in Kotido have confirmed Nakuny’s death and say they have arrested one suspect as part of ongoing investigations. District Police Commander Hussein Ssekalema urged residents to share any information that could help apprehend the attackers. Authorities are reportedly pursuing four more suspects linked to the killing.
Kotido Deputy Resident District Commissioner John Magezi strongly condemned the murder, warning that such acts threaten to destabilize the progress made in securing the region. He cautioned young people against engaging in criminal acts, stressing that anyone found guilty would face prosecution, possibly before a military court.
Security personnel remain on high alert, and officials are calling for calm as efforts to restore peace and order continue.
