Makindye East Member of Parliament Hon. Nyeko Derrick has announced that he will not seek re-election in the 2026 general polls, a decision that reshapes the race for the hotly contested National Unity Platform (NUP) flag in the constituency.
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Nyeko thanked his constituents for the support they had given him throughout his political career. “It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote,” he said.

The MP admitted the decision would come as a disappointment to his campaign team and supporters but insisted it followed deep personal reflection. “After our strong belief that we would once again win the Makindye East MP seat I have made the difficult decision not to offer myself for election in the coming polls,” he declared.
Nyeko, who has recently faced criticism from sections of his electorate over alleged underperformance, defended his record and stressed that his leadership had been free of corruption. “I remain the man of no corruption, no problems,” he said.
His withdrawal now shifts attention to the NUP primaries, where entertainment journalist Robert Sekidde, popularly known as Tuff B, and prominent city lawyer James Kayondo are emerging as the frontrunners for the party ticket. The two are expected to battle for the endorsement of NUP supporters in Makindye East, a constituency known for its vibrant and competitive politics.
