Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, has announced the initiation of the search for a new Chancellor by the University Council. This action follows the completion of Prof. Ezra Suruma’s term as the outgoing Chancellor of Makerere University.
Prof. Nawangwe, presiding over the 74th Graduation Ceremony, mentioned that the process is currently in progress. In the interim, he will fulfill the duties of the Chancellor as outlined in the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act.
Prof. Suruma, who served Makerere University since 1973, held various roles in the Government of Uganda, including Minister of Finance, before returning as Chancellor in 2016. Prof. Nawangwe commended his exemplary service and wished him success in his continued dedication to the nation.
Congratulating the graduating staff, Prof. Nawangwe expressed appreciation for their pursuit of additional academic qualifications. He also acknowledged the family members of staff graduating during the ceremony.
Recognizing student leaders at different levels, the Vice Chancellor applauded their commitment to both leadership and academic pursuits. Additionally, he introduced the Makerere University Vice Chancellor’s Research Excellence Awards, honoring outstanding contributors to research and publication.
Prof. Nawangwe announced the Best Overall Male and Female Researchers, Prof. Moses Robert Kamya and Prof. Rhoda Wanyenze, respectively, based on the highest number of publications from 2017 to 2023. He congratulated researchers from each college and the university library for their exceptional contributions.
He also disclosed the launch of the book titled “Makerere’s Century of Service to East Africa and Beyond: 1922-2022,” a publication highlighting the university’s unique journey. The book, published by Makerere University Press, is available for purchase at the University’s Souvenir Shop in The Frank Kalimuzo Building.
