Makerere University has confirmed the admission of 1,732 students under the government sponsorship scheme for the academic year 2025/2026, marking a significant increase in the number of beneficiaries compared to previous years.
The new intake forms part of the over 4,000 students who receive government-funded university education annually across Uganda’s public universities. Makerere, the country’s oldest and largest university, once again took the lion’s share of the slots.
According to the Academic Registrar, Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, the allocation this year is notably higher than last year’s, reflecting the growing demand for higher education and the university’s central role in shaping Uganda’s human resource capacity.
The remaining 2,268 students under the government sponsorship scheme have been placed in other public universities including Gulu University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Busitema University, Kabale University, Kyambogo University, Lira University, Muni University, and Soroti University.
The scholarship, which covers tuition and functional fees, also includes a modest living allowance for the admitted students, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
