Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nandala Mafabi has criticized the government for failing to compensate the people of Teso for cattle lost during past insurgencies, promising full restitution once elected president.
Addressing supporters in Gweri County, Soroti District, Mafabi accused the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government of turning a once prosperous region into one of the poorest in the country.
“Teso once had cows and cotton. You were proud and self-reliant, but all that was taken away from you,” Mafabi said. “There is already a court ruling on cattle compensation. Why is Museveni not implementing it? He is now telling you he will give five cows per family where are they? Those are lies. Only the government of Nandala Mafabi will compensate you fully.”
The opposition leader said the NRM had failed to deliver meaningful development to Teso despite decades in power, adding that Uganda now needs new leadership.

“What Museveni has not done in 40 years cannot be done in five. Uganda wants new blood and fresh brains,” he told supporters.
Mafabi also took aim at what he described as wasteful government spending on campaign materials, arguing that the funds should have been used to uplift citizens.
“I see posters and billboards of Museveni everywhere. Who doesn’t know him? During COVID-19, he was the only one on radio and TV. That money could have helped our people,” he said.
He pledged to revive the region’s economy through investments in agriculture, including plans to establish a starch factory in Teso to add value to cassava and ensure farmers earn more from their produce.
“We are going to invest money in agriculture so that whatever you produce gives you money,” Mafabi said.
He also promised sweeping reforms in the health sector, including upgrading referral hospitals to national level and improving doctors’ welfare.
“Our health sector will be looked into seriously. Instead of going to Mulago, you will go to Soroti Hospital. No one will have to travel abroad for treatment,” he said.
