Lukolokomba Takes Over as Buikwe DP Chair, As Lulume Steps Down

Lukolokomba has been elected the new Democratic Party (DP) chairperson for Buikwe District, replacing longtime party leader and Buikwe South MP Dr. Michael Lulume Bayigga, who stepped down to pursue national leadership ambitions.

The leadership transition was confirmed during a DP delegates’ meeting held at Lugazi Municipal Hall, where Lukolokomba pledged to rejuvenate the party’s grassroots support and unite its fragmented base. “We want to unite the party, attract back our colleagues who left, and strengthen our structures to fight for change together,” he said in his acceptance speech.

Dr. Lulume, a vocal figure in opposition politics and a key pillar in DP’s presence in Buikwe, announced that he was resigning from the district post to focus on national politics. He signaled his intention to contest for the party’s top leadership, currently held by Justice Minister Norbert Mao. “I have done my part to popularise the Democratic Party in Buikwe. Now it’s time to pave the way for new leadership here as I prepare to contest for the party’s top national seat,” Lulume stated.

MP Fred Kayondo welcomed the leadership change and urged Lukolokomba and his team to concentrate on rebuilding rather than mourning past defections. “Let us not waste time regretting those who left. Our task is to ensure we nominate candidates for every position across Buikwe,” he said, emphasizing local mobilization ahead of upcoming elections.

Lulume also took the opportunity to criticize the infighting among opposition parties, warning that internal divisions only serve to strengthen the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). “Some opposition parties have lost direction. Instead of fighting the regime, they’re turning their guns on fellow opposition forces,” he said.

He further encouraged political actors to embrace leadership renewal. “Leaving the chairmanship is my way of giving opportunity to those ready to lead,” Lulume added.

The election of Lukolokomba is seen as a fresh chapter for DP in Buikwe, a district where the party has historically enjoyed significant support.
