Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Sam Kutesa has distanced himself from the political contest in Mawogola North, saying he is not supporting any parliamentary candidate and is focused exclusively on delivering votes for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Kutesa made the remarks during a meeting convened to mobilise support for President Museveni in the Ssembabule region, amid renewed interest in local politics following the withdrawal of his daughter, Shartis Musherure Nayebare, from the Mawogola North MP race in favour of Museveni’s brother, Godfrey Aine Kaguta, widely known as Sodo.

“I am not backing anyone for MP. My mission is to simply secure victory for President Museveni and nothing else,” Kutesa told supporters. “I am not involved in local politics between members of parliament and whoever because I don’t want to interfere in their issues.”
He said he had launched district-wide mobilisation aimed at boosting the NRM presidential vote share beyond what the ruling party achieved in the previous election.
Kutesa also commended the peaceful political atmosphere in the ongoing campaigns, contrasting it with the violence that characterised the 2001 election cycle.
“Every effort has been made by the government to ensure a peaceful campaign season, and we have seen that across many parts of the country. I hope the same continues here,” he said.
He emphasised that the NRM’s internal decisions on parliamentary flag-bearers had already been made and communicated, adding that his role would remain singular and clear.
“The party has made its decisions. My role is to start the President’s campaignthat is all I am doing,” Kutesa said.
He urged residents of Ssembabule to rally behind President Museveni as the region intensifies mobilisation ahead of the 2026 general elections.
