Karuma and Ayago Bridges to Reopen to All Traffic on Monday 14 April

The Ministry of Works and Transport has confirmed that Karuma and Ayago bridges along the Kampala-Gulu highway will fully reopen to all types of traffic on Monday, April 14, 2025, following a period of repair works.

The bridges had been temporarily closed to allow for the installation and curing of new expansion joints a critical component for enhancing the durability and safety of the structures.

Mr. Allan Ssempebwa, a spokesperson from the Ministry’s communications department, noted that the works were essential to maintaining the long-term structural integrity of the bridges. “Karuma Bridge will be open to all categories of vehicles starting April 14. Heavy trucks and trailers that were previously restricted will now be allowed to use the bridge,” he said.

Although major construction has been completed, some additional minor tasks will continue, including the fitting of guard rails, street lighting, cat’s eyes, riverbank protection, and painting the steel girders beneath the bridge. These remaining works will proceed without disrupting the flow of traffic.

During the repair period, motorists were advised to use alternative routes, such as the Soroti–Kumi–Pallisa Tirinyi Nakalama Iganga road for travel from Lira to Kampala, and the Kafu Masindi Paraa Pakwach route for travel from Kampala to Gulu.

The reopening is expected to significantly ease travel, especially with the upcoming Easter holiday weekend, reducing congestion and cutting down travel times for commuters heading to northern Uganda.
