Kampala’s Roads Nowhere, PM Nabanjja Urges Contractors To Speed Up

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has expressed concern over the slow progress of road works under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP). Despite the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure, the project’s first phase, focusing on 19.85 kilometers, is moving at a sluggish pace.

Nabbanja was accompanied by the Executive director of KCCA Ms. Sharifah Buzeki, Mr. Francis Musa Echweru, Minister of State for Works, and minister for Kampala and other officials, during the inspection of ongoing roadworks at Sir Albert Cook Road on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, urged contractors and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to double their efforts and deliver the project within a month.

The project aims to upgrade and construct major roads in greater Kampala, with a larger target of 74.5 kilometres. To expedite the road works, the government has stepped up inspections to ensure the project’s timely completion.

The slow progress of the project is a concern, given the government’s investment in improving Kampala’s infrastructure. The Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP), funded by the African Development Bank, aims to upgrade 69.8 kilometers of roads, and 123 kilometers of non-motorized traffic facilities, and provide street lighting.

Kampala has a road network of over 2,000 kilometers, but only 348 kilometers are considered to be in good condition, with most roads in urgent need of rehabilitation.
