This incident underscores the persistent challenge of cattle theft in Uganda, particularly in the Savannah Region, encompassing the Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola districts. In 2024 alone, over 400 head of cattle were reported stolen across these districts, with Nakasongola emerging as the most affected. Between May and June 2024, Nakasongola registered 75 cases of cattle theft, surpassing Luweero’s 19 and Nakaseke’s 18 cases during the same period.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to combat this menace. In November 2024, the Savannah Police launched a comprehensive operation across the three districts, resulting in the recovery of 352 stolen animals and the arrest of 54 suspects. However, challenges persist, including the use of forged veterinary documents and fake license plates by criminals to transport stolen livestock undetected.
