By n a significant political announcement, Hon. Jimmy Akena, the outgoing Member of Parliament and a longstanding pillar within the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), has revealed that he will not contest in the upcoming general elections.
Addressing journalists at a recent press briefing, Akena underscored his decision as a strategic step to create room for new leadership within both his constituency and the party.
“I have many who have shown interest in taking over my seat, and they will go through a process. Whoever wins, I will support them to be able to hold the seat for UPC,” Akena said.
Having served several terms in Parliament, Akena highlighted that this move aligns with his vision to refocus on other priorities while fostering the development of emerging leaders within the UPC.
Akena reassured party supporters that his decision does not signify a retreat from political life or party activities. Instead, it reflects his commitment to ensuring the sustainability and growth of the UPC through the nurturing of young talent.

“I will remain active in supporting the party and ensuring that it stays true to its mission of addressing the needs of Ugandans,” he noted.
