The incident occurred on the night of January 3, 2026, at about 8:40 pm at the plant located in Lugongwe LC1, Lugongwe Parish. According to police, an unspecified number of suspected burglars allegedly broke into the premises, prompting a response from the guard on duty.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP Lydia Kigozi said Onyait Daniel, a guard employed by Quantico Securico Company, detected unusual movements by people who were not expected to be at the facility at that time. When he attempted to stop them to establish their identity, the suspects reportedly scattered and fled in different directions.
“In the process, the guard discharged a bullet aimed at one of the fleeing suspects, who was hit in the chest and died instantly,” Kigozi said in a statement dated January 4, 2026.
Police officers from the Lugongwe Mineral Protection Unit, under the command of Sgt. Makhoha Jimmy, responded to the scene and was later joined by the Kassanda District Scene of Crime Officer. The body of the deceased, described as an unidentified adult male, was removed from the scene and taken to Kassanda Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.
An AK-47 submachine gun, registration number UG Pol PSO 56400151010447, was recovered from the scene. Police have taken Onyait into custody to assist with investigations.
Police have cautioned members of the public in Kassanda District and neighbouring areas against trespassing in highly secured installations, particularly mining and mineral processing sites.
“Such areas are sensitive and heavily guarded. Where access is unavoidable, permission must first be obtained from the management of the premises,” Kigozi said.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the attempted burglary are ongoing.
