Gov’t Spokesperson Ofwono Opondo Heads to Parliament Unopposed

Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has been declared unopposed as the Eastern Region Representative of Older Persons in Parliament.

The declaration was made by Returning Officer Nsuube Richard, who cited Section 37 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, CAP 177, which allows for unopposed election where only one validly nominated candidate is presented.

“I, Nsube Richard, being the Returning Officer for Eastern Region Representative of Older Persons in Parliament, declare Ofwono Opondo Podel of the National Resistance Movement Party elected unopposed,” he announced during the brief declaration ceremony.

Speaking shortly after being declared, Ofwono Opondo said he was honored by the trust placed in him and pledged to serve both the older persons and the wider Ugandan public with integrity.

“I am elated that my nomination and campaign process were found faultless. The way I complied with electoral laws, I will comply with all the laws of Uganda,” he said, adding that he would ensure peace and order during the campaign period.

He expressed gratitude to the older persons of Eastern Uganda for their confidence in him, noting that their endorsement without contest showed their belief in his leadership.

“I pledge to support older persons of Eastern Region, older persons of Uganda, and the entire public of Uganda, because once I become an MP, I will speak beyond the older persons’ constituency,” he stated.

Ofwono Opondo, a veteran journalist and long-serving government spokesperson, will now represent the Eastern Region’s older persons in the 12th Parliament.
