Gov’t Releases Shs4.3bn for Kiteezi Compensation

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki has announced that government has released Shs4.3 billion to compensate families affected by the Kiteezi landfill collapse, with more than 75% of verified claimants already paid.

Speaking to the media, Buzeki said the compensation process, which had been pending for months, has now been finalized and payments are being made directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

“I would like to thank the families affected by the Kiteezi incident for being patient. They waited for long enough, but today I have good news,” Buzeki said. “As we speak now, we have finalised all processes to have them paid, and most of them will have a smile on their faces when the money hits their accounts.”

She said the funds were released by the Government of Uganda following a comprehensive assessment of losses by the Chief Government Valuer, and payments were based strictly on verified claims.

“Government was able to provide Shs4.3 billion for compensation. We have compensated over 75 per cent of the affected persons who submitted the required documents,” Buzeki said, adding that the remaining claimants will be paid once they complete documentation.

Buzeki cautioned beneficiaries against dealing with brokers or middlemen, noting that all payments are processed directly through KCCA.

“We encouraged them not to entertain any brokers, shortcuts or excuses. Payments have been made directly to personal accounts submitted to the authority,” she said.

She described the compensation exercise as a key step in rebuilding public trust and reaffirmed KCCA’s commitment to accountability and service delivery.

“This is how public trust is built. As an authority, we are committed to serving the people in the way they expect to be served,” Buzeki said.

The Kiteezi landfill, Kampala’s main waste disposal site located in Wakiso District, partially collapsed last year in August following prolonged heavy rains. The incident affected surrounding communities, damaging homes and property and raising concerns over safety and environmental management at the site.

In the aftermath, government tasked KCCA to assess the damage, relocate affected families, and process compensation for losses suffered. The delay in compensation had sparked public concern and repeated calls for swift government intervention.

The latest payment marks a significant milestone in resolving the compensation phase of the Kiteezi saga, as authorities also continue to explore long-term solutions for waste management in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
