Government Launches Land Awareness Week in Bugisu and Sebei

The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development has announced the 9th National Land Awareness Week, which will run from August 25 to 29, 2025, in the Bugisu and Sebei sub-regions.

The campaign, themed “Promoting Land Rights for Sustainable Land Use, for Inclusive and Sustainable Development,” will cover nine districts including Mbale, Sironko, Bulambuli, Namisindwa, Manafwa, Bududa, Kapchorwa, Kween, and Bukwo.

State Minister for Lands, Hon. Dr. Sam Mayanja, said the initiative aims to address recurring challenges such as land disputes, land grabbing, environmental degradation, lack of legal documentation for customary owners, and displacement caused by natural disasters like landslides.

“The Land Awareness Week seeks to bridge gaps in governance by creating a platform where government, civil society, cultural and religious leaders, and private sector actors can engage directly with communities, provide solutions, and promote harmony,” Mayanja said during the launch at the Uganda Media Centre.

Key activities will include community dialogues, mobile legal aid clinics, media sensitisation, debates, music, dance, and drama, all designed to increase awareness on land rights. At least 5,000 tree seedlings will also be planted to promote environmental conservation.

The Minister noted that government agencies such as the National Forestry Authority, Uganda Wildlife Authority, and National Environment Management Authority will participate to ensure that land governance aligns with environmental protection.

Particular focus will be given to vulnerable groups such as women, youth, and persons with disabilities, as well as empowering local governments and customary institutions to manage land matters fairly and transparently.

“This is not just an event, but a collective movement to secure land rights, protect the environment, and build a foundation for inclusive and sustainable development,” Mayanja said, urging community members to actively participate.

The Land Awareness Weeks were first introduced in 2017 and have since become an annual platform for improving land governance and strengthening community trust in government institutions.
