The government has handed over vehicles to 16 gazetted cultural institutions across Uganda to support their operations, with a commitment to replenish the fleet every five years, according to Hon. Betty Amongi, Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony, Amongi said the move recognizes the critical role cultural institutions play in promoting unity and development at the community level.

“These institutions are supporting government by performing work that would otherwise fall on state structures. That’s why today we are facilitating them,” she said, adding that each institution receives a monthly allowance of UGX 60 million to sustain their activities.
Amongi clarified why Buganda Kingdom was not part of the monthly disbursement system, noting that its leadership requested a one-off payment to align with its cultural norms.
“Buganda Kingdom indicated that their culture does not allow government or any individual to provide the Kabaka with a vehicle. They preferred a lump sum, including accumulated allowances and funds for the vehicle,” Amongi explained.

The government has since handed over a cheque covering the full amount to Buganda Kingdom, which will utilize the funds for development initiatives as per its work plan.
Amongi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to respecting cultural values while ensuring all recognized institutions receive equal support.
