The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Mr. Ben Kumumanya, has officially commissioned the Buwana Milk Collection Centre, a UGX 845 million facility located in Kinyogoga Sub-County, Nakaseke District. The project was implemented under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) initiative and represents a key step in strengthening the dairy value chain and improving household incomes in the cattle corridor.

The milk collection centre is one of several impactful investments rolled out by the LEGS project in Nakaseke. Other infrastructure upgrades include the rehabilitation of the 33-kilometre Gomero–Migani–Kagongi–Buwana Road, the Gayaza–Kalungu–Mityomere Community Access Road, market sheds in Magoma and Katelekamese, the Kikwata Coffee Processing Facility, and the Kiwoko Maize Milling Plant. These interventions aim to enhance agricultural productivity, improve rural connectivity, and open up better market opportunities for farmers.
Commending Nakaseke District for its efficient service delivery, Mr. Kumumanya highlighted its impressive performance in the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP), where it ranked 12th out of 176 local governments, and its 14th position nationally in revenue collection. He reaffirmed the district’s eligibility for further support under LEGS II, citing its strong commitment to government programs.
The improved infrastructure, particularly the upgraded roads, has enabled farmers to transport milk and other produce more efficiently, increasing their earnings. Mr. Abaho Dan, Chairperson of the Buwana Comparative Milk Group, said the area produces enough milk to fully utilize the new facility. He also revealed that plans are underway to start milk processing to boost prices.
“Previously, due to poor road conditions, milk sold for as little as UGX 200 per litre. Thanks to the improved Gomero–Migani road, prices have now risen to UGX 700,” Abaho noted, adding that value addition could push prices even higher.
The new milk centre complements earlier LEGS efforts to increase livestock productivity, including the training of Artificial Insemination (AI) technicians and the skilling of local youth and extension workers to offer AI services. These initiatives aim to improve cattle breeds and increase milk yields in the district.

The LEGS project also aligns closely with the Parish Development Model (PDM) by addressing critical pillars such as production, processing, infrastructure, market access, and financial inclusion. Backed by the Government of Uganda, the Lives and Livelihood Fund, and the Islamic Development Bank, the project is helping rural communities shift from subsistence to commercial agriculture, steadily transforming livelihoods across Nakaseke.
