Gen Muhoozi Orders Release of Senior Army Officer Linked to Gold Dealer Kidnap, Robbery

Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the immediate release of Colonel James Kasule, a senior officer recently arrested in connection with a high-profile gold dealer robbery and kidnapping in Mubende District.

Col. Kasule was being held at Makindye Military Barracks following his arrest over the weekend. He had been implicated in a criminal operation that involved the kidnapping of a businessman dealing in gold, with the intent of extorting large sums of money. Investigations had revealed that a military vehicle under Kasule’s control was used in the operation a discovery that fueled concern over the misuse of state resources and army personnel for private criminal activity.

Despite the gravity of the allegations which included charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, abuse of office, and extortion, Gen. Muhoozi came out in full defence of Col. Kasule, issuing a directive for his immediate release via social media.

“I hear that our Intelligence officers arrested Col. Kasule for something. He should immediately be released,” Muhoozi tweeted. “Col. Kasule is one of our old fighters. I know him very well. I shall deal with him myself.”

Col. Kasule, who has served in several top-tier commands including the Mountain Brigade and Operation Shujaa in eastern DR Congo, had been serving as the 2nd Deputy Divisional Commander in the UPDF. He was due for retirement next year. His arrest sent ripples through the security establishment, drawing scrutiny over internal discipline and accountability.

An internal UPDF inquiry had already been initiated, running parallel to police-led investigations. Authorities were reportedly compiling evidence related to the alleged use of official military assets in the Mubende incident.

The area, known for artisanal gold mining, has recently drawn attention for increased criminal activity involving syndicates targeting dealers and miners for cash and gold. The arrest of a serving high-ranking officer in such an operation added to the public shock.

Gen. Muhoozi’s directive, though not unusual given his position as CDF, has raised questions over command influence and the independence of military investigations. Critics have voiced concern over whether due process will be followed, while others see the decision as a possible effort to shield longtime allies from prosecution.

As of press time, it was unclear if Col. Kasule had been officially released or if UPDF authorities would comply with the order without completing the ongoing investigations.
