Brigadier Muwonge replaces Major General James Birungi, who has been reassigned as Uganda’s Military Attaché and Defence Advisor to Bujumbura, Burundi. Until his appointment, Brig Muwonge served as Deputy Commander of the same division and has now been elevated to lead the unit.
Maj Gen Birungi had assumed command of the Mountain Division in April this year, following his tenure as Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS). He had earlier swapped roles with Maj Gen Richard Otto, who previously commanded the division.
Brig Muwonge recently accompanied the CDF on a strategic visit to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In his new role, he also assumes command of Operation Shujaa, the joint UPDF-FARDC military campaign targeting the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorist group in eastern DRC.
