Former Nakasongola Woman MP Margret Komuhangi Dead

Margaret Komuhangi, a distinguished Ugandan politician and former Nakasongola District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), has died in India, where she had been receiving medical treatment. She was 54 years old.

Born on December 26, 1970, in Nakasongola District, Komuhangi was known for her passionate advocacy for gender equality, education, and social development. She pursued her education at Makerere University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1994. She later obtained a Master of Business Administration from Makerere University Business School in 2006, solidifying her commitment to academic excellence and leadership.

Komuhangi’s political career began in 2001 when she was elected as the first Woman MP for Nakasongola District under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. Despite a legal challenge that led to her election being annulled in 2002, Komuhangi remained resolute, reclaiming her seat in 2011 and serving consecutively until 2021.

During her tenure, Komuhangi served as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Gender, Labour, and Social Development, where she spearheaded several initiatives to promote women’s rights and community welfare. She was instrumental in advocating for the enforcement of laws against female genital mutilation and in championing the rights of orphaned and vulnerable children. Her efforts to curb child marriage were particularly notable, achieving a 20% reduction in her district between 2017 and 2018.

Komuhangi was also deeply engaged in fostering economic empowerment for women through various community projects. She believed in building a strong, self-reliant society, often urging the government to increase support for grassroots initiatives.

In the 2021 elections, Komuhangi successfully secured the NRM party flag for the Nakasongola Woman MP race. However, she lost the general election to her competitor, Victorious Zawedde, marking the end of her parliamentary journey.

Her death has left a significant void in Uganda’s political and social spheres. Leaders and colleagues have lauded her as a visionary leader whose commitment to gender equality and community development will be remembered for years to come.

“She was a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and a mentor to many. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched,” said one of her former colleagues in Parliament.

Details surrounding her medical condition and subsequent passing remain limited, but the loss has sparked widespread mourning in Nakasongola and beyond. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

Margaret Komuhangi’s life and career were defined by her tireless efforts to uplift the marginalized and promote equality. Her contributions to Uganda’s development will continue to inspire future generations.
