By The forum for democratic change (FDC) has vehemently opposed the deployment of the Uganda people’s defence forces (UPDF) in South Sudan, citing concerns that the move is motivated by partisan interests rather than a genuine desire to implement the peace agreement.
According to FDC Deputy president, Hon. Fungaroo Kaps Hassan, the party does not support the UPDF deployment, as it may exacerbate existing tensions between the SPLM of Gen. Kiir and Dr. Machar’s party (SPLM-IO).
“The UPDF deployment is not about implementing the peace agreement, but rather supporting one side of the conflict,” Hon Fungaroo stated. instead, the FDC proposes a three-pronged approach to support South Sudan”
FDC proposes the proper implementation of the 2018 peace agreement, which has faced numerous challenges since its signing. the party also called for the release of opposition leader Dr Riek Machar and all other opposition leaders and military officials arrested in connection with the conflict.
“If the conditions are necessary for a higher-level use of force UNMIS should be upgraded from a peace keeping mission under the guidance of the United Nations” stated hon Fungaroo.
with the latest development, FDC deputy president also expressed worry about Uganda’s image in the geopolitics of the region thus imploring president to withdraw the UPDF from South Sudan.
“Fungaroo noted that “i would like to implore president Museveni regardless of the good things you have done for the region withdraw from these matters to safe the image of Uganda”
The current crisis in South Sudan stems from a complex history of conflict, political instability, and ethnic tensions, which culminated in a civil war in 2013 and a fragile peace deal in 2018.
