FDC Extends Internal Election Roadmap

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has announced an extension of its internal election roadmap to allow more time for party members to participate in the nomination process across the country. At the same time, the opposition party has raised serious concerns over the Electoral Commission’s failure to provide an official Special Interest Groups (SIGs) register, accusing the body of creating room for “ghost candidates.”

Speaking at the FDC party headquarters on Thursday, Boniface Bamwenda Toterabuka, Chairperson of the FDC Electoral Commission, confirmed that the nomination period for party parliamentary, mayoral, and local government candidates had been pushed forward to give space for participation and proper endorsement, especially of special interest group candidates.

“Picking of nomination forms for all positions will continue until June 11,” Toterabuka said. “Nomination for councillors and sub-county chairpersons will take place on June 12 and 13, while MPs, LC5 chairpersons, city and municipal mayors will be nominated on June 16 and 17.”

Party primaries at all levels will now be conducted between July 2 and July 12, with consensus building and the internal voting process running from June 18 to July 1.

The FDC chairperson said the adjustment was also aimed at enabling members of the party’s top leadership and MPs to support youth, elders, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) who are currently undergoing nomination in their respective constituencies.

However, Toterabuka expressed frustration over what he called the Electoral Commission’s “continued failure” to fulfill its constitutional obligation of providing political parties with updated SIG registers. “This lapse creates room for fraudulent nominations, including youth who are far beyond the 18 to 29 age bracket, non-elders posing as older persons, and non-disabled individuals being registered as PWDs,” he warned.

He said such irregularities risk disenfranchising legitimate SIG voters and misrepresenting key interest groups. “We demand that Justice Simon Byabakama and the National Electoral Commission urgently avail FDC with the official SIG voter registers,” he added.

Toterabuka reminded all members that the nomination process has been decentralized to district levels to ease access and reduce transport costs for aspirants. He further urged district electoral supervisors to strictly enforce nomination requirements and electoral fees.

According to the FDC, nomination fees have been set at UGX 100,000 for Members of Parliament, UGX 50,000 for district chairpersons, and UGX 20,000 for municipal and division mayors. Councillor positions will remain free of charge.
